Formentera is a small island in Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the Balearic Islands (the others are Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza) and it is located 6 km (4 miles) south of Ibiza.

It is the tiniest island of the archipelago: its surface is just about 83 kmq (about 32 square miles); the longest distance between two points is about 24 km (15 miles), from Cap de Barbaria to El Far de la Mola. Formentera is basically a plain: the only hill is El Pilar de la Mola on the east side of the island (192 m high, 630 feet).

The island features many wonderful beaches and coves along its 69-km coastline, that will make you feel like being in the Caribbean or in some atoll in the South Pacific.

Formentera can be visited in a one-day trip from Ibiza, but it can also be your destination for a one-week or longer vacation.

When to travel to Formentera

Formentera has the typical Mediterranean weather, characterized by hot and dry summers. So, you can travel to Formentera anytime between April and October. I definitely suggest not going in July or August though, in order to avoid the crowds and have the chance to really enjoy the beauty of the island and its beaches.

How to get to Formentera

Given its small size, Formentera does not even have an airport. You need to fly to Ibiza to get there. Then, you can take the ferry from Ibiza’s harbour to Formentera: it takes about 35 minutes. Check it out on the web-site Balearia.com.

How to get around Formentera

If you have got a car in Ibiza, you may consider to embark with it on the ferry and then drive around the island. During the low season it can be a good idea, but in the high season it might make you crazy, as it can be hard to park your car at the beaches.

In any case, the funniest and quickest way to get around Formentera is to rent a scooter. This will make your vacation much more stress-free and adventurous! You will find a lot of rentals around La Savina harbour or in the village Es Pujols. Keep in mind that you will need a driving licence to rent a scooter. I definitely suggest booking your scooter in advance, especially if you are going to visit the island during the high season.

Furthermore, another great alternative way to explore the island is to rent a bike, which will make your vacation even more exciting and active!

Where to stay in Formentera

Formentera is a quite expensive island, in particular during the high season. Probably, the cheapest accomodation you may find is an apartment for rent in Es Pujols, the most popular village of Formentera: keep in mind that it can get really crowded during the high season.

So, if you are looking for something more authentical and relaxing, I definitely suggest renting a small villa in the countryside, to breathe the real atmosphere of this amazing island. As mentioned above, Formentera is very small, so you can get anywhere in a few minutes, wherever you are staying. I stayed in a small villa at the Viviendas Ferrer.

Playa de Ses Illetes

Ses Illetes is definitely the most representative, iconic and beautiful beach of Formentera. In different occasions it has ranked among the best beaches in the world. Ses Illetes surely looks like heaven, featuring crystal-clear water. It is located in the north of Formentera, facing the west side of the El Trucador peninsula, part of the Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera Natural Park. You will have to pay a small fee to enter the park. Ses Illetes is a long narrow beach that stretches for about 450 m. Along the beach you will find many restaurants and bars: as they are really expensive, I definitely suggest bringing some food with you when you visit this beach.

After entering the park, don’t hurry to park your vehicle at one of the first parking lots you meet, but go straight ahead down the dirt road and leave your car or scooter at one of the beach bars.

Then, you will finally be able to enjoy this beautiful beach. You can keep walking north along the shore and see how the peninsula gets narrower and narrower, until you realize to be surrounded by the sea on both sides. In fact, at the end of the El Trucador peninsula, the Ses Illetes beach and the East beach (la Playa de Llevante, the beach on the other side of the peninsula) merge into each other to become one single strip of pristine white sand.

Espalmador

At the end of the El Trucador peninsula you will see Espalmador, a small desert island separated from Formentera by a narrow strait about 150 m (500 feet) long. As the water is not deep at all (it is about one metre deep), you can cross this passage on foot: you just have to keep your bag or backpack above your head, to keep it from getting wet! You can get to Espalmador also by a boat service from Illetes, but of course it would be much less exciting: in fact, theoretically, the crossing of the waterway on foot would not be allowed, but everybody does, as you can see.

Once you set foot on the island, you will definitely get a taste of what heaven looks like: pristine white sand and crystal-clear water make this place a true paradise.

In Espalmador you can also experience a natural mud bath. After a short walk around the island clockwise along the shore, follow the sign marking the path from the beach to the center of the island. You will know to be on the right track, when you meet people completely dirty by mud coming back. It is not clear if a bath into this natural mud is really good for your body, but however it is an exciting and funny experience. Keep in mind that you will have to wash your swimsuit several times to get rid of the mud smell, which is quite strong. So, I definitely suggest not wearing your brand new swimsuit if you think to have a mud bath!

Formentera: una gemma incontaminata nel cuore del Mediterraneo

Formentera è una piccola isola in Spagna, nel Mar Mediterraneo. È una delle Isole Baleari (le altre sono Maiorca, Minorca e Ibiza) ed è situata 6 km a sud di Ibiza.

È l’isola più piccola dell’arcipelago: la sua superficie è appena 83 kmq; la massima distanza fra due punti è di circa 24 km, da Cap de Barbaria a El Far de la Mola. Formentera è generalmente pianeggiante: l’unica sporgenza è El Pilar de la Mola sul lato est dell’isola, alta 192 m.

Quando andare a Formentera

Ti suggerisco però di non andare a luglio o agosto, per evitare le folle di turisti ed aver quindi modo di goderti appieno la bellezza dell’isola e delle sue spiagge.

Come arrivare a Formentera

Date le sue piccole dimensioni, Formentera non ha un aeroporto. Devi quindi prima prendere un aereo fino a Ibiza. A quel punto, devi prendere il traghetto dal porto di Ibiza per Formentera: il viaggio dura circa 35 minuti. Controlla gli orari sul sito Balearia.com.

Come muoversi a Formentera

Se hai un’auto a Ibiza, puoi pensare di imbarcarla sul traghetto e poi girare l’isola con la tua auto. In bassa stagione può essere una buona idea, ma in alta stagione potrebbe farti diventare matto, poichè è molto difficile trovare parcheggio vicino alle spiagge.

In ogni caso, il modo più divertente e veloce per muoversi a Formentera è noleggiare uno scooter. Così la tua vacanza sarà molto meno stressante e più avventurosa! Troverai molti punti di noleggio sia al porto di La Savina, sia a Es Pujols. Ricordati che è necessario essere in possesso di una regolare patente di guida per noleggiare uno scooter. Ti consiglio vivamente, inoltre, di prenotare il tuo scooter in anticipo se visiterai l’isola in alta stagione.

Inoltre, un’altra divertente alternativa per esplorare l’isola è quella di affittare una bicicletta, che renderà la tua vacanza ancora più eccitante e attiva!

Dove alloggiare a Formentera

Formentera è un’isola piuttosto cara, in particolare durante l’alta stagione. Probabilmente, l’alloggio più economico che puoi trovare è un appartamento in affitto a Es Pujols, il paese più turistico di Formentera: tieni presente, però, che in alta stagione è veramente affollato.

Quindi, se cerchi qualcosa di più autentico e rilassante, ti consiglio di affittare una piccola casa (tipo bifamiliare) in campagna, per respirare la vera atmosfera di questa isola. Come detto in precedenza, Formentera è molto piccola, quindi potrai raggiungere qualsiasi punto in pochi minuti da qualunque luogo in cui ti trovi. Io ho alloggiato in una piccola casa presso le Viviendas Ferrer.

Playa de Ses Illetes

Ses Illetes è senza dubbio la spiaggia più bella e rappresentativa di Formentera. In più occasioni si è classificata fra le migliori spiagge del mondo. Ses Illetes pare sicuramente un paradiso, grazie alle sue acque cristalline. Si trova nel nord di Formentera, sul lato ovest della penisola El Trucador, a sua volta parte del Parco Naturale di Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera. Bisogna pagare un piccolo pedaggio per accedere al parco. Ses Illetes è una lunga e stretta spiaggia che si stende per 450 m. Lungo la spiaggia troverai molti bar e ristoranti: poichè sono molto costosi, ti consiglio caldamente di portare con te un pranzo al sacco quando visiti questa spiaggia.

Una volta entrato nel parco, non aver fretta di lasciare il tuo mezzo al primo parcheggio che trovi, ma prosegui dritto lungo la strada sterrata e parcheggia il tuo scooter o la tua auto nei pressi di uno dei bar sulla spiaggia.

A questo punto, potrai finalmente goderti questa meravigliosa spiaggia. Puoi continuare a camminare lungo la riva verso nord: ti accorgerai che la penisola diventa sempre più stretta, al punto che sarai circondato dal mare su entrambi i lati. Infatti, alla fine della penisola di El Trucador, la spiaggia di Ses Illetes e la spiaggia di Llevante (la spiaggia sull’altro lato della penisola) si uniscono, per diventare una unica lingua di sabbia bianca.

Espalmador

Alla fine della penisola di El Trucador vedrai Espalmador, una piccola isola deserta separata da Formentera da un piccolo stretto di mare ampio circa 150 m. Poichè l’acqua è poco profonda (solamente circa un metro), puoi attraversare questo passaggio a piedi: devi solo fare attenzione a tenere la tua borsa o il tuo zaino sopra la tua testa, per evitare che si bagnino! Puoi arrivare a Espalmador anche grazie al servizio in barca dalla spiaggia di Illetes, ma naturalmente è molto meno eccitante: infatti, in teoria, sarebbe vietato attraversare lo stretto di mare a piedi, ma, come vedrai, il divieto non è molto osservato…

Una volta che avrai messo piede sull’isola, resterai meravigliato dalla sabbia bianca e dall’acqua cristallina di questo luogo che lo rendono un vero e proprio paradiso terrestre.

A Espalmador potrai anche provare un bagno di fango naturale. Dopo una breve passeggiata intorno all’isola lungo la riva in senso orario, segui l’indicazione per il sentiero verso il centro dell’isola. Saprai di essere sulla strada giusta se vedrai persone ricoperte di fango che ti vengono incontro. Non è chiaro se un bagno in questo fango naturale sia veramente benefico per il corpo, ma resta comunque un’esperienza divertente. Ricordati che dovrai lavare il tuo costume diverse volte per eliminare l’odore del fango, che è piuttosto forte. Di conseguenza, ti suggerisco vivamente di non indossare il tuo costume nuovo di zecca se pensi di fare un bagno nel fango!
