Pen y Fan is the highest peak of South Wales (886 m, 2907 feet). A hike to Pen y Fan is a must for any trip to South Wales and in particular to the Brecon Beacons National Park!
While Wales may not be as popular as Scotland or England, however it offers incredible landscapes and hiking trails immersed in pure nature. Outdoor lovers won’t be disappointed. Moreover, I found Wales much cheaper than England, which is great in particular for a solo traveller, as single rooms are often quite expensive. I stayed in Swansea for three nights and I found it a good base to explore the surrounding areas, like the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Gower Peninsula, another beautiful place which I highly recommend, despite it was raining when I visited it.
In particular, the Brecon Beacons National Park is located in South Wales, at the border with England. It is a mountain range featuring dramatic landscapes that will let every hiking lover breathless. As mentioned, Pen y Fan is the highest peak of the Brecon Beacons. Even if you don’t like hiking, a road trip through the Brecon Beacons National Park will definitely be memorable, as the scenic drive offers many incredible viewpoints. I recommend driving carefully, as sheep often graze along the roads.
What does Pen y Fan mean?
Pen y Fan is a Welsh name. In English, it would sound like “the top of the mountain”.
Where is Pen y Fan?
Pen y Fan is located in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The two most popular starting points for a hike to Pen y Fan are along the A470. From Swansea it is about a 50-minute drive. I hiked Pen y Fan in July 2023 and I parked my car at the Pont ar Daf Car Park on the A470 (7.50 £ all day, credit cards are not accepted and you need to have the exact amount of money), where a trail to Pen y Fan begins. Here you can find toilets and a visitor centre. At the moment, there was also a mobile café at the parking lot: I don’t know if it is there all the time. You can follow directions on Google from this map.
How long does Pen y Fan take?
The round trip to Pen y Fan is about 6.5 km (about 4 miles) and took me about 90 minutes. The elevation gain is about 450 m (1476 feet).
How hard is Pen y Fan?
The hike to Pen y Fan is not hard if you are reasonably fit. The trail is quite steep in particular at the beginning, but you can take breaks to catch your breath along the way. I recommend wearing hiking boots: during the walk I met some people wearing flip flops, but I would certainly not advise it. Bring also enough water with you. Once you leave the parking lot, you won’t find any refreshments along the way. If it rained recently, consider that the ground may be slippery.
Pen y Fan weather
Weather in Wales is unpredictable in general, in particular in the mountains where it can change dramatically. When I took this hike, the sky was clear at the car park, but, when I got to the top of Pen y Fan, the weather suddenly changed and it started to rain. Moreover, a thick fog formed and visibility was near zero. The temperature dropped too. So, it is very important to have a rain jacket and warm clothing with you. Having recorded my path on my phone, I could retrace my steps and find my way back. Otherwise, it might not have been that easy to get back. The risk of losing yourself in the fog is real.
Pen y Fan directions
Getting to the top of Pen y Fan from the Pont ar Daf Car Park is quite straightforward. You just need to follow the trail that starts from the visitor centre.
The views along the way are great from the start, where green meadows stretch endlessly on both sides of the trail!
When you finally reach the sign at the top of Pen y Fan, you will definitely feel rewarded. The views are absolutely sensational. The scenery really looks like one from a fantasy novel.

Sebbene non sia popolare quanto la Scozia o l’Inghilterra, il Galles offre comunque paesaggi incredibili e percorsi di trekking immersi nella natura più incontaminata. Gli amanti della vita all’aria aperta non resteranno delusi. Inoltre, ho trovato il Galles molto più economico della vicina Inghilterra, cosa che non guasta in particolare per chi viaggia da solo, poiché le camere singole sono spesso molto costose. Ho soggiornato a Swansea per tre notti e ho trovato la città una buona base di partenza per esplorare le zone circostanti, in particolare il Brecon Beacons National Park e la Gower Peninsula, un altro luogo da non perdere, che consiglio caldamente, nonostante stesse piovendo quando l’ho visitata.
In particolare, il Brecon Beacons National Park si trova nel Galles del sud, al confine con l’Inghilterra. Si tratta di una catena montuosa caratterizzata da paesaggi fiabeschi che lasceranno ogni amante di trekking senza fiato. Come detto, il Pen y Fan è la montagna più alta del Brecon Beacons. Anche per chi non ama camminare, un road trip attraverso il Brecon Beacons National Park sarà comunque indimenticabile, in quanto le strade offrono panorami magnifici. Consiglio di guidare con cautela, poiché spesso è possibile incontrare pecore al pascolo lungo le strade.

Dove si trova Pen y Fan?
Il monte Pen y Fan si trova nel cuore del Brecon Beacons National Park. I due punti più comuni da cui iniziare un trekking sul Pen y Fan sono lungo la strada A470. Da Swansea occorrono circa 50 minuti in auto. Ho fatto il trekking sul Pen y Fan nel luglio 2023 e ho parcheggiato l’auto al Pont ar Daf Car Park sulla A470 (7,50 £ tutto il giorno, le carte di credito non sono accettate, perciò è necessario avere l’importo preciso in contanti), da cui ha inizio un sentiero verso il Pen y Fan. Qui si trovano anche un centro visitatori e servizi igienici. Al momento dell’escursione era presente pure un venditore ambulante che serviva caffé: non so se sia presente costantemente. Quanto è difficile il trekking sul Pen y Fan?
Il trekking sul Pen y Fan non è particolarmente impegnativo per chi è ragionevolmente in forma. Il sentiero è piuttosto ripido soprattutto all’inizio, ma ci si può prendere una pausa lungo il percorso per riprendere fiato. Raccomando di indossare scarpe da trekking: durante il trekking ho incontrato persone che indossavano infradito e non è la scelta più adatta. Consiglio di portare acqua a sufficienza: una volta lasciato il parcheggio non è più possibile fare rifornimento. Attenzione infine al terreno scivoloso in particolare se avesse piovuto recentemente.
Condizioni meteo su Pen y Fan
Il meteo in Galles è imprevedibile in generale, in particolare sulle zone di montagna dove può cambiare repentinamente. Il giorno in cui ho fatto il trekking, il cielo era chiaro al parcheggio, ma, una volta arrivato sulla vetta, il tempo è cambiato all’improvviso e ha iniziato a piovere. Inoltre, si era formata una fitta nebbia e la visibilità era quasi a zero. Anche la temperatura era calata di molto. È molto importante quindi avere con sé una giacca impermeabile e abbigliamento per tenersi al caldo. Avendo registrato il percorso sul mio smartphone, ho potuto rintracciare i miei passi e percorrere il sentiero che avevo seguito all’andata. Altrimenti non sarebbe stato così semplice tornare indietro. Il rischio di perdersi con la nebbia è reale.
Indicazioni per arrivare sul Pen y Fan
Arrivare sul Pen y Fan dal parcheggio Pont ar Daf Car Park è piuttosto semplice. Basta seguire il sentiero che inizia dal centro visitatori.
I panorami lungo il percorso sono magnifici fin dall’inizio, dove prati verdi si distendono all’infinito su entrambi i lati.
Quando si raggiunge l’insegna sulla vetta del Pen y Fan, ci si sente senza dubbio ricompensati. I panorami sono incredibili. Pare essere catapultati in un romanzo fantasy.
