Göteborg (Gothenburg in English) is a lively town in the south-west of Sweden, in the north of Europe. It is not a very big city, as its population is about 570,000 people. It is the second bigger city in Sweden, after Stockholm. It is located in the Västra Götaland county. Gothenburg features many canals which go across the town.
Moreover, Gothenburg is characterized by a wonderful archipelago in front of it, where you can immerse yourself in a peaceful natural environment. Many beautiful lakes dot the landscape around the town, giving you a small taste of what Sweden can offer.
Finally, Gothenburg is now a very modern and sophisticated town, featuring fashion boutiques, elegant streets, beautiful parks and design hotels.
As perhaps you might imagine if you have been following my blog for a while, during my visit to Gothenburg I did not focus on the typical attractions of the city very much, but I spent more time enjoying the natural landmarks that surround the city. So, in this post I am going to tell you what to do and see in Gothenburg in three days. As a matter of fact, Gothenburg can be both worth a short visit for a week-end and be part of a longer trip across Sweden.
But first, let me give you some basic practical information about the city.
How to get to Gothenburg
Gothenburg’s international airport Landvetter (IATA: GOT) is well-connected with the rest of Europe. Check out deals on low-cost airlines websites, like Ryanair or Easyjet. Otherwise, search for your best flight on skyscanner.com.
Gothenburg is also connected with the rest of Sweden by fast and reliable trains. You may consider going around the country by train, then. For instance, after visiting Gothenburg, I continued my trip getting to Stockholm in a pleasant train journey. Check out the trains timetables on SJ website, the Swedish railway transport company.
How to get around Gothenburg
Gothenburg has an efficient public transport system, based on trams, buses, trains and ferries. You may consider to activate a 24 h or 72 h ticket to have unlimited access to the public transport network during your stay. Check out Gothenburg’s public transport website.
Eventually, you may consider taking Uber to get around the city.
What is the currency in Sweden?
The Swedish Krona (SEK) is the official currency in Sweden. In general, credit cards are widely accepted in Swedish major cities, so you might not even need to withdraw cash.
What is the weather like in Gothenburg?
During the summer the weather in Gothenburg is mild and warm, with maximum temperatures over 20°C. However, the weather can often change suddenly: so, I recommend always bringing some warm clothing with you.
Things to do and see in Gothenburg
Lake Stora Delsjön
Stora and Lilla Delsjön are two connected beautiful lakes east of Gothenburg city center. You can get to Stora Delsjön lake by the #5 tram, getting off at the Töpelsgatan stop. Check out the schedule on Google on or Vasttrafik travel planner website.
Once you get to the Töpelsgatan stop, after a short walk you will get to the Delsjöbadet, a nice beach by the lake. Here you can have a swim or go canoeing for instance. Moreover, from the beach many hiking trails begin, offering amazing views over the lake. Personally, I took the loop path around the lake, which is about 7.5 km long. It was a wonderful hike in a really peaceful environment, surrounded by a rich vegetation. I definitely recommend it.
Gothenburg archipelago
As I mentioned above, Gothenburg features a wonderful archipelago. The southern archipelago is made up of nine main islands and several other minor islands. All the islands in the southern archipelago are car-free: so, they are a true paradise for nature lovers.
Then, you should not miss to visit at least one island of the southern archipelago during your stay in Gothenburg. You can take either the #9 tram or the #11 tram from Gothenburg to get to the Saltholmen boat terminal: it takes about 35 minutes. From there, you can take the ferry to one of the major islands: Asperö, Brännö, Köpstadsö, Styrsö, Donsö and Vrångö. Usually ferries depart once every hour.
During my stay in Gothenburg I chose to visit Vrångö (the southern-most island of the archipelago): probably because it was one of the less visited! The northern and southern areas of the island are natural reserves, featuring beautiful trails across the island. So, after a short hike, I had a break at a small beach and guess what? I even had a swim into the sea! I would not ever have imagined that water could be so warm in Sweden even in the summer: it was a really pleasant bath! Remember to bring your bathing suit then! I recommend bringing some food and water with you, as the only bars and restaurants on the island are near the harbour and they are quite expensive.
Slottsskogen Park
Slottsskogen Park is the main park of Gothenburg, located south of the city center. It is the perfect place for a walk along one of the numerous paths across the woods that the park features or just to relax laying down on the grass, enjoying the quietness and the peace of nature. There are different buses and trams to get here: check out on Google the most convenient for you, depending on where you are.
Keillers Park
Keillers Park is the area surrounding the Ramberget mountain (87 m, 285 feet high), located north of the city center and the Göta river. You can get to Keillers Park from Gothenburg city center by taking a tram and then a connected bus. Otherwise, you may take a Uber ride.
Getting to the top of the hill is a pleasant hike and the view from the top over the city is really amazing!
Walking along Gothenburg canals by night
Having a stroll along Gothenburg canals and across its bridges by night is definitely a pleasant experience. For instance, you can start your walk from the Poseidon statue in Götaplatsen, finishing at the Maritiman ship and the Göteborg Opera in the Göta Canal: it’s about 2 km. In general, I found the city really safe.
A boat tour through Gothenburg canals
A boat tour is another relaxing activity that will give you the opportunity to see Gothenburg from a different point of view. The tour begins in Kungsportsplatsen and will take you around the city along its canals for about one hour. I remember one bridge was so low that we had to duck our heads when we passed under it!
This is how I spent my three days in Gothenburg. From here, I took a train to Stockholm to continue my trip in Sweden. Of course, you may decide to visit Gothenburg as a simple city break in a week-end too.

Göteborg: cosa vedere in tre giorni e fare un assaggio di Svezia
Göteborg è una vivace città nel sud-ovest della Svezia, nel nord Europa. Non è una città molto grande, avendo una popolazione di circa 570.000 persone. È la seconda città più grande della Svezia dopo Stoccolma. Si trova nella contea di Västra Götaland. Göteborg è caratterizzata da molti canali che attraversano la città.
Inoltre, Göteborg può vantare un meraviglioso arcipelago davanti ad essa, in cui è possibile immergersi nella tranquillità della natura. Molti splendidi laghi punteggiano il paesaggio intorno alla città, dandoti un assaggio di cosa possa offrire la Svezia più in generale.
Infine, Göteborg è oggi una città moderna e sofisticata, caratterizzata da negozi di moda, eleganti vie, stupendi parchi urbani e hotel di design.
Come forse potrai immaginare se stai seguendo il mio blog da un po’ di tempo, durante la mia visita a Göteborg non mi sono focalizzato molto sulle tipiche attrazioni della città, ma ho trascorso più tempo godendomi le bellezze naturali che circondano la città. In questo articolo racconterò cosa vedere e fare a Göteborg in tre giorni. Di fatto, vale la pena visitare Göteborg sia per un semplice week-end, sia come parte di un tour più lungo attraverso la Svezia.
Prima di tutto, ecco alcune informazioni utili da conoscere prima di visitare la città.
Come arrivare a Göteborg
L’aeroporto internazionale di Göteborg Landvetter (IATA: GOT) è ben collegato con il resto dell’Europa. Verifica le offerte sui siti di compagnie aeree low-cost, come Ryanair o Easyjet. Altrimenti ricerca direttamente un volo su skyscanner.com.
Göteborg è ben collegata anche con il resto della Svezia da treni veloci e affidabili. Potresti quindi anche considerare di visitare la Svezia spostandoti in treno. Ad esempio, dopo aver visitato Göteborg, ho continuato la mia visita in Svezia andando a Stoccolma in un piacevole viaggio in treno. Verifica gli orari dei treni su SJ website, la compagnia ferroviaria svedese.
Come muoversi a Göteborg
Göteborg ha un efficiente sistema di trasporto pubblico, basato su tram, autobus, treni e traghetti. Puoi valutare se attivare un abbonamento per 24 h o 72 h per avere accesso illimitato alla rete di trasporto pubblico durante la tua visita. Verifica sul sito del trasporto pubblico di Göteborg.
Infine, puoi considerare di muoverti in città anche utilizzando Uber.
Quale moneta si usa in Svezia?
La Corona Svedese (SEK) è la moneta ufficiale utilizzata in Svezia. In generale, le carte di credito sono comunemente accettate nelle principali città svedesi; di conseguenza, potresti anche non aver bisogno di prelevare contante durante la tua permanenza in Svezia.
Che tempo fa a Göteborg?
Durante l’estate il tempo a Göteborg è piacevolmente caldo e mite, con temerature massime sopra i 20°C. Il tempo può comunque cambiare spesso all’improvviso: di conseguenza, ti consiglio di portare sempre con te una felpa o una giacca leggera.
Cosa vedere e fare a Göteborg
Lago Stora Delsjön
Stora e Lilla Delsjön sono due stupendi laghi connessi fra loro che si trovano ad est del centro di Göteborg. Puoi arrivare al lago Stora Delsjön prendendo il tram numero 5, scendendo alla fermata Töpelsgatan. Controlla gli orari su Google o sul sito Vasttrafik travel planner.
Una volta giunto alla fermata di Töpelsgatan, dopo una breve passeggiata arriverai a Delsjöbadet, una piccola spiaggia che si affaccia sul lago. Qui, ad esempio, potrai farti una nuotata oppure farti un giro in canoa. Inoltre, dalla spiaggia hanno inizio vari sentieri lungo i quali è possibile godere di incredibili viste sul lago. Nel mio caso, ho percorso il sentiero circolare intorno al lago, lungo circa 7,5 km: è una bellissima passeggiata, che offre la possibilità di immergersi completamente nella pace della natura circostante. La consiglio assolutamente.
Arcipelago di Göteborg
Come accennato all’inizio, Göteborg è caratterizzata da un meraviglioso arcipelago. L’arcipelago meridionale è composto da nove isole principali e molte altre isole minori. Tutte le isole nell’arcipelago meridionale sono chiuse al traffico: sono quindi un vero paradiso per gli amanti della natura.
Non dovresti quindi perdere l’occasione di visitare almeno una delle isole dell’arcipelago meridionale durante la tua permanenza a Göteborg. Puoi prendere il tram numero 9 o numero 11 dal centro di Göteborg per arrivare al terminal dei traghetti a Saltholmen: occorrono circa 35 minuti. Da qui puoi imbarcarti su un traghetto verso una delle isole maggiori: Asperö, Brännö, Köpstadsö, Styrsö, Donsö e Vrångö. Normalmente i traghetti partono una volta ogni ora.
Durante la mia permanenza a Göteborg ho scelto di visitare Vrångö (l’isola più a sud dell’arcipelago): probabilmente perchè è una delle meno visitate! Le aree nel nord e nel sud dell’isola sono riserve naturali, caratterizzate da splendidi sentieri attraverso l’isola. Ricordo che, dopo una breve passeggiata, mi fermai per una pausa in una piccola spiaggia e indovina un po’? Ebbi modo di farmi un bel bagno in mare! Non avrei mai immaginato che l’acqua potesse essere così calda in Svezia anche in estate: fu veramente un bagno rigenerante! Ricordati quindi di portare il costume da bagno! Ti consiglio infine di portare del cibo e dell’acqua con te, poichè gli unici bar e ristoranti a Vrångö sono nelle vicinanze del porto e sono piuttosto cari.
Slottsskogen Park
Slottsskogen Park è il principale parco di Göteborg, situato a sud del centro della città. È il luogo perfetto per una passeggiata lungo uno dei numerosi sentieri fra i boschi che caratterizzano il parco o per rilassarsi sui suoi prati, godendosi la tranquillità e la pace della natura. Ci sono molti bus e tram per arrivare qui: controlla su Google quello più comodo per te a seconda di dove ti trovi.
Keillers Park
Keillers Park è l’area che circonda la collinetta Ramberget (alta circa 87 m), situata a nord del centro della città e del fiume Göta. Puoi arrivare a Keillers Park dal centro di Göteborg prendendo prima un tram e poi un autobus. Altrimenti puoi chiamare Uber.
Arrivare in cima alla collina è una piacevole passeggiata e la vista dall’alto sulla città è veramente incredibile!
Camminare lungo i canali di Göteborg di notte
Fare una passeggiata lungo i canali di Göteborg e attraverso i suoi ponti è un’esperienza molto rilassante. Ad esempio, puoi iniziare la passeggiata dalla statua di Poseidone in Götaplatsen, concludendola nei pressi della nave Maritiman e del Teatro dell’Opera di Göteborg sul canale di Göta: sono circa 2 km. In generale, ho trovato la città molto sicura.
Un tour in barca sui canali di Göteborg
Un tour in barca è un’altra attività rilassante che ti darà l’opportunità di vedere Göteborg da un diverso punto di vista. Il tour inizia a Kungsportsplatsen e ti condurrà in giro per la città lungo i suoi canali per circa un’ora. Mi ricordo che un ponte era così basso che dovemmo abbassare la testa per poterci passare sotto!
Questi sono stati i miei tre giorni a Göteborg. Da qui presi un treno per Stoccolma per continuare il mio viaggio in Svezia. Naturalmente, puoi senza dubbio decidere di visitare Göteborg anche per un viaggio di un semplice week-end.
