Key Biscayne is an island part of the Miami-Dade county, south of Miami Beach and east of Miami. It is connected to Miami by the Rickenbacker Causeway. The causeway goes through Virginia Key as well before reaching Key Biscayne. If you want to breath some peace from the hustle of Miami Beach, this is the place to go. Here, you will easily find a quiet spot to relax and enjoy a perfect day on the beach, bathing in crystal-clear water.

How to get to Key Biscayne

The cheapest way to get to Key Biscayne from Miami is by bus. Catch the bus #102 from the Brickell Station in Downtown Miami and have a direct ride to the island. View the update schedule here. It takes about 25 minutes. If you are staying in Miami Beach, the trip takes about twice as much, since you have to add the time to get to Downtown. My suggestion is then to consider to get a Uber to shorten your travel time. Of course, you can get there with your own car. In this case, keep in mind that you will have to pay a toll to access the Rickenbacker Causeway and the Bill Baggs State Park.

What to see and do in Key Biscayne

Driving along the Rickenbacker Causeway will give you a good feeling from the beginning of your trip, as you can enjoy the view of the ocean on both sides of the road.

Key Biscayne can be divided in three different areas from north to south:

• Crandon Park in the northern part;
• Key Biscayne village in the middle;
• Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in the southern part.

Crandon Park

Crandon Park is characterized by a rich tropical vegetation. It is an ideal place both for families and for those who like outdoor activities. In fact, here you can go biking, have a pic-nic (there are a lot of table pavilions among the vegetation, grills for barbecues and children’s playgrounds) or have a peaceful stroll along the shore.

From here, I suggest to have a walk along the shore going southwards to the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. It will take about one hour (it is about 3.5 miles or 5.2 km). You realize that you are entering the park when you no longer have hotels on your right side.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park was established in 1967. It was named after Bill Baggs, editor of the Miami News from 1957 to 1969, who fought to make it a recreational protected area. This quote summarizes his views:

But the people also needs parks, room to run or recline, to listen to the soft drawl of the sea, a place to dock a small boat or simply a quiet place to walk.

In the early years of the 19th century, Cape Florida was the main point of escape for slaves and Seminoles from their plantation masters. From here, they could get to the Bahamas with sloops. The construction of the lighthouse by the government in 1825 put eventually an end to the escapes.

This building is actually the main attraction of the park. Unfortunately, it is possible to visit the lighthouse and go to the top only with a guided tour. Check the schedule here among with other available activities at the park. In particular, in the surroundings of the lighthouse, you will find very interesting signs related to the history of the park. Here, you can have a nice walk along the paths through the park and then have some rest on the beach. Eventually, you can have a coffee at the café at the main entrance of the park before getting back to Miami.

Remember: if you want to call a Uber to get back in town, you have to walk to the village, as Uber drivers don’t pick you up inside Bill Baggs State Park.

Key Biscayne: un angolo di paradiso a Miami

Key Biscayne è un’isola parte della contea di Miami-Dade: si trova a sud di Miami Beach e a est di Miami. È connessa a Miami attraverso il Rickenbacker Causeway. Il viadotto passa anche attraverso l’isola di Virginia Key prima di raggiungere Key Biscayne. Se vuoi assaporare un po’ di pace dalla frenesia di Miami, questo è il posto dove andare. Qui troverai facilmente un angolo tranquillo dove poterti rilassare e goderti una perfetta giornata in spiaggia, facendo il bagno in acque cristalline.

Come arrivare a Key Biscayne da Miami

L’autobus è il mezzo più economico per arrivare a Key Biscayne da Miami. Prendendo l’autobus #102 dalla Brickell Station nel centro di Miami, si arriva dritti all’isola. Controlla gli orari aggiornati qui. Occorrono circa 25 minuti. Se parti da Miami Beach, invece, il viaggio dura circa il doppio, poichè devi aggiungere il tempo per arrivare in centro. Il mio suggerimento è quindi quello di considerare Uber per accorciare il tragitto. Naturalmente, puoi raggiungere Key Biscayne anche con la tua auto. In questo caso, ricorda che dovrai pagare un pedaggio per accedere al Rickenbacker Causeway e al Bill Baggs State Park.

Cosa vedere e fare a Key Biscayne

Guidare sul Rickenbacker Causeway ti trasmetterà belle sensazioni fin dall’inizio della tua giornata, potendo godere della vista dell’oceano su entrambi i lati della strada.

Key Biscayne può essere suddivisa in tre diverse aree da nord a sud:

• Crandon Park nella parte nord;
• Key Biscayne village nel centro dell’isola;
• Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park nella parte sud.

Crandon Park

Crandon Park è caratterizzato da una ricca vegetazione tropicale. È un luogo ideale sia per famiglie sia per coloro che amano le attività all’aperto. Qui infatti, avrai l’oppportunità di andare in bicicletta, fare un pic-nic (ci sono molti padiglioni con tavoli in mezzo alla vegetazione, griglie per fare un barbecue e giochi per bambini) o fare una passeggiata tranquilla lungo la battigia.

Da qui, ti suggerisco appunto di camminare lungo la spiaggia verso sud in direzione del Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Ci vuole circa un’ora (sono più o meno 5,2 km). Ti accorgerai che stai entrando nel parco quando non vedrai più gli hotels alla tua destra.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

Il Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park fu creato nel 1967. Fu chiamato così in onore di Bill Baggs, direttore del giornale Miami News dal 1957 al 1969, che lottò per rendere il parco un’area protetta ricreativa. Questa citazione riassume il suo pensiero:

Ma la gente ha bisogno anche di parchi, spazi per correre o sdraiarsi, per ascoltare il dolce suono del mare, un luogo per attraccare una barchetta o semplicemente un posto tranquillo per camminare.

Nei primi anni del 1800, Cape Florida era il principale punto di fuga per schiavi e Seminoli dai loro padroni delle piantagioni. Da qui potevano arrivare alle Bahamas in barca. La costruzione del faro da parte del governo nel 1825 pose termine infine alle fughe.

Questo edificio rappresenta l’attrazione principale del parco. È possibile visitare il faro e salire fino in cima solo attraverso un tour guidato. Controlla gli orari delle visite qui insieme ad altre attività da effettuare all’interno del parco. In particolare, nei dintorni del parco, si trovano molte insegne interessanti che raccontano la storia del parco. Qui potrai passeggiare lungo i sentieri del parco o rilassarti semplicemente in spiaggia. Alla fine della giornata, potrai goderti un caffè presso il bar all’entrata principale del parco, prima di tornare a Miami.

Ricorda: se per tornare in città vuoi chiamare Uber, devi arrivare a piedi al Key Biscayne village, perchè gli autisti di Uber non verranno a prenderti all’interno del parco!
