Ushuaia is the capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. It is often regarded as the gateway to visit the Tierra del Fuego. It is an important harbour from where cruises to Cape Horn and Antarctica depart.
Why is Ushuaia called the end of the world?
Ushuaia is known as the end of the world. It is located at the southernmost tip of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. This makes it the southernmost city in the world too! Actually the Chilean town of Puerto Williams is claiming the same status too, despite its population is less than 3,000 people. In contrast, Ushuaia has about 80,000 people. This population size is more comparable to the status of a city.
Where is Ushuaia located?
As mentioned above, Ushuaia is located at the southernmost tip of the Tierra del Fuego. It is surrounded by the Andes to the north and bounded by the Beagle Channel to the south.
It is interesting to highlight that Ushuaia is unique in Argentina. It is the only city located between the ocean and the Andes mountain range. In fact, in the rest of the continent, the Andes run from north to south. Argentina lies east of them. Therefore, all territories beyond the Andes belong to Chile. In contrast, on the Tierra del Fuego, the Andes run from west to east. Ushuaia lies south of them. So, that makes it the only place in Argentina separated by the Andes from the rest of the country.
What latitude is Ushuaia Argentina?
Ushuaia is located at the latitude of 54.8019° S. Compared to other places in the northern hemisphere, Ushuaia has almost the same mirrored latitude as Newcastle in the UK. It also matches the latitude of Denmark and Newfoundland in Canada.
What does Tierra del Fuego mean?
Tierra del Fuego means “Land of fire”. This name might sound weird considering the low temperatures characterizing the place. It was given to this land by the first European explorers, when they observed the numerous fires lighted by the native population, the Yaghanes.
Ushuaia meaning
In the ancient Yaghan language, Ushuaia meant “deep bay”.
Ushuaia Argentina: how to get there
Being a remote destination, the easiest way to get to Ushuaia is by plane. I got to Ushuaia with a flight from El Calafate; then, from Ushuaia I flew back to Buenos Aires. If you are doing a tour across Argentina, you will save a lot of time flying. The flight from El Calafate to Ushuaia takes about 80 minutes. In contrast, the flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia takes about three hours and a half. You can take a taxi to get to town from the airport.
Finally, there are another couple of ways to get to Ushuaia. You can travel by bus from Punta Arenas, in Chile. Another option is to drive along the Ruta 40 and the Ruta 3.
How far is Ushuaia from Antarctica?
Ushuaia is often regarded as a gateway to Antarctica, given its latitude.
In fact, the harbour of Ushuaia is the main place where cruises to Antarctica depart. It takes a three-day voyage from Ushuaia to get to the Antarctic Peninsula. So, usually a cruise from Ushuaia to Antarctica lasts about ten days. Unfortunately, cruises to Antarctica are very expensive: consider at least 10,000 US$. If you are lucky, you can get a last minute deal for 4,000 – 5,000 US$.
What airlines fly to Ushuaia Argentina?
I flew to Ushuaia with Aerolineas Argentinas from El Calafate in December 2024. There are flights from the major Argentinian airports. I took several flights with this airline and I never had any issue.
Another airline that flies to Ushuaia is Flybondi.
In my experience the flight from El Calafate to Ushuaia was absolutely incredible. I was seated next to the window during takeoff. This gave me the opportunity to watch the beautiful turquoise colour of Lago Argentino. Approaching Ushuaia, flying over the snow-capped peaks of the Andes was amazing!
Ushuaia weather
Given its latitude, the weather in Ushuaia is never too warm. During the summer, the average maximum temperature can reach 10°C (51°F). During the winter the average minimum temperature is about -5°C (23°F).
Consider that seasons in Ushuaia are reversed with respect to the northern hemisphere. So, the winter goes from June to September and the summer goes from December to March.
However, also in the summer, the weather can change dramatically at any time. Wind is definitely a factor, as it can make you feel much colder. April and May are usually the months when the winds are less strong.
What to wear in Ushuaia Argentina?
Given the weather conditions described above, I recommend bringing warm clothing with you all the time. Waterproof trousers and jacket are a must. Hiking boots are really important when you go on a hike.
Is Ushuaia safe?
I found Ushuaia totally safe. It is a tourist destination and the locals are really nice. I never felt unease.
Is Ushuaia expensive?
Like the rest of Argentina, unfortunately also Ushuaia has become a quite expensive destination. Since 2024 prices have skyrocketed in particular for eating out at bars and restaurants. They are now similar to prices in Europe and the United States. I found prices for lodging still competitive instead.
So, in general, Argentina is no longer a cheap destination since 2024.
For instance, according to the renowned Big Mac index by The Economist, in 2024 Argentina ranked as the fourth country in the world where the famous burger was most expensive. Switzerland ranked as the number one.
When to visit Ushuaia Argentina?
The high season in Ushuaia is from December to March during the summer, as mentioned above. Nonetheless during the winter (from June to October) Ushuaia offers an important ski resort at the Cerro Castor.
Is Ushuaia worth visiting?
Ushuaia is definitely worth visiting! During the summer Ushuaia offers many activities and places to visit. There are numerous hiking trails in the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. You can also find trails on the mountains surrounding Ushuaia, such as Glaciar Martial and Laguna Esmeralda. Or you can do a boat trip along the Beagle Channel (highly recommended!). You surely won’t get bored in Ushuaia!
Ushuaia where to stay
During my trip to Ushuaia in December 2024, I stayed at Anum Hostel in a mixed 6-bed dormitory. I had a good stay. Each bed was provided with a curtain for a better privacy, a reading light and a power socket. Moreover, a continental breakfast was included. The hostel is located in the centre of Ushuaia in Avenida San Martin. So, you will find everything you need nearby. In fact, in Avenida San Martin there are many shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. If you are not familiar with hostels, check out my post about how to choose the right hostel for you!
Being a solo traveler, staying in a hostel was great to meet new people and travelers and share our experiences. If you are afraid to travel alone, remember that joining a group tour can help you meet new people. It’s a great way to connect with others.
How many days in Ushuaia?
I spent five nights in Ushuaia. I really loved the magical scenery of the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego and the Andes. I think that at least three nights in Ushuaia are a must!
Are there taxis in Ushuaia Argentina?
Yes, there are taxis in Ushuaia! The main taxi stop is just in front of the Tourist Port. Here you can always find a long line of taxis waiting for customers. Taking a taxi is the best option to get to the airport. I also took a taxi to get to Glaciar Martial and to Playa Larga. Keep in mind that buses are not regular in Ushuaia.
Moreover, getting a taxi is itself an experience. You can always learn something by the driver, who is obviously a local. Drivers are always willing to share their experience and knowledge of the place.
Ushuaia what to do
Let’s see now in detail what things you can do in Ushuaia. There are many local tour operators that organize tours and day trips. Sometimes you can do the trip on your own. However, joining a group tour is always a good way to meet new people. Taking part in a group tour is also safer when the trip is about a hike in the wilderness.
Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego
The Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego is located about 10 km west of Ushuaia. It offers many hiking trails surrounded by amazing views over Bahia Lapataia and the Fugean Andes. The contrast between the ocean and the snow-capped peaks of the Andes is absolutely stunning.
Here you have also the opportunity to spot wildlife along the way. Exploring the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego is definitely a must if you visit Ushuaia. You can visit the park on your own. Before going, visit the Tourist Office in Ushuaia (Secretaría de Turismo de Ushuaia). You can find it just in front of the Tourist Port. Here you can take a map of the park. You can find more information at the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego website.
You can get to the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego from Ushuaia by a regular shuttle service. The shuttle operates with a minivan. The starting point is just one block from the Tourist Office.
The shuttle departs every hour in the morning. I paid a return ticket 25 US$, which did not include the entrance to the Parque Nacional. Once on board of the minivan, the first stop is at the entrance of the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. Here you have to pay the admission to the Parque Nacional, which was 40,000 ARS.
The next stop of the shuttle is at the famous End of the World Train. I did not take it, as I thought it was a quite touristy thing. However, I find it is right to mention it, as it is one of the most popular attractions of Ushuaia.
The next stop is Ensenada Zaratiegui, which is where I got off. From here I followed the Senda Costera trail, which stretches along the coast through a forest of Nothofagus. The path is 8 km (5 miles) long (one way). It leads to the Alakush Visitor Center (Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego). Here you can find a restaurant, restrooms, a museum and a shop. From the Visitor Centre you can enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Acigami (also known as Lago Roca).
At this point, you have several options.
- you can take a shuttle back to Ushuaia;
- you can continue the hike along the lake Acigami until the border to Chile (Senda Hito XXIV);
- you can continue the hike to Bahia Lapataia, where the iconic Ruta 3 ends.
I chose to continue the hike to Bahia Lapataia (it’s another 4.4 km, 2.7 miles). Along the way you can take some short detours to some viewpoints. Once in Bahia Lapataia, I took the shuttle back to Ushuaia. Consider that in the afternoon the shuttle runs every two hours.
Boat tour on the Beagle Channel
Another must if you visit Ushuaia is a boat tour on the Beagle Channel.
The Beagle Channel borders the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego. It connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. Other connections are the Drake Passage and the Strait of Magellan.
The Beagle Channel got its name from the ship HMS Beagle. This ship was used to explore the coasts of Tierra del Fuego in 1826. In one of the voyages also the naturalist Charles Darwin was on board of the ship.
A boat tour on the Beagle Channel offers unique views over the coast of Tierra del Fuego. It also provides views of the Andes and the small islands that dot these waters. Moreover, you have the opportunity to spot wildlife like sea lions and cormorants.
There are many companies that offer a cruise on the Beagle Channel. You can find their offices just in front of the Tourist Port of Ushuaia. In the end, I went with Patagonia Adventure Explorer. This company organizes the trip in small groups with a small boat. In this way, it is possible to get very close to the rocks where the sea lions lie. The guide speaks both English and Spanish.
At the end of the trip, the boat stops at Isla Bridges. You can disembark there and take a short guided walk. The scenery is absolutely stunning.
Laguna Esmeralda hike
Laguna Esmeralda is a beautiful lake nested on the Fugean Andes. It owes its name to its magical turquoise waters.
The hike to Laguna Esmeralda offers stunning views over the Andes from the very beginning. This makes it a very pleasant walk. The hike is not hard at all, since the slope is gentle. The total hike’s length is about 10 km (6 miles).
The trail starts on the Ruta 3, 19 km east of Ushuaia. You can see the sign on the road. I did the hike with Arpon Trekking. However, you can do it on your own. For instance, you can get to the starting point by taxi.
The trail first enters a forest and then goes softly up to the lake, along a stream. Pay attention to the dams built by the beavers along the way. Beavers are in fact very widespread here, as this is their ideal environment. There are not predators of beavers in the Tierra del Fuego. Beavers were introduced in 1946 to try to establish a fur business, but the project miserably failed. At the same time, the beavers began to multiply without control and today they are a threat to the ecosystem.
Once you get to the lake, the view is just awesome. From the shore of the lake it is possible to see the Ojo del Albino Glacier. When I got to the lake, the wind was really strong and cold. I highly recommend having warm clothes with you. Look at the waves on the lake in the picture!
Martial Glacier hike
The hike to Martial Glacier starts near the centre of Ushuaia. You can do it on your own (like I did), since the trail is well marked and directions are clear. Otherwise you can join a group trip with Arpon Trekking.
I took a taxi from Ushuaia to the starting point of the trail. There is a taxi stop here so you will find taxis waiting when you finish the hike. There is also a really cozy café here, named La Cabaña Casa de Té. The cakes are delicious. It is the perfect place to relax for a while at the end of the hike.
From the starting point there are different trails you can follow.
I came here in the afternoon after the trip on the Beagle Channel. Because I didn’t have much time, I did the yellow hike. That is Sendero del Martial. However, at the end of the trail the views over the glacier are impressive.
Playa Larga: hike to Estancia Tunel
The hike to Estancia Tunel starts at the end of the dirt road that leads to Playa Larga, about 9 km (5.6 miles) east of Ushuaia. It is a beautiful coastal trail, mostly flat, which leads to stunning viewpoints over the Beagle Channel.
The total length of the hike is about 6.5 km (4 miles) with an elevation gain of 120 m (400 feet), including some detours to viewpoints. I did the hike on my own, getting to the starting point by taxi. I had agreed with the driver I would text her after finishing the hike. This is one of the reasons why I always buy a local SIM card when I visit a new country.
Consider that the wind can be really strong along the way: so, bring warm clothes with you. At the most exposed points along the trail, the wind was so strong. I could barely hold my phone to take a picture!
Lago Escondido and Lago Fagnano
I joined a group trip to visit Lago Escondido and Lago Fagnano, located about one hour drive from Ushuaia. The trip looked like quite adventurous, as you do it on a 4×4. However, in the end you finish to spend most of the time in the car. The most funny part of the trip was the lunch, when our guide made a delicious barbecue! I must say that Argentinian beef is really tasty: one of the best I have ever had!
During the trip, you have the opportunity to stop at some beautiful viewpoints. These include Paso Garibaldi and the shore of Lago Fagnano.
Ushuaia where to see penguins
The only place where you can see penguins near Ushuaia is Isla Martillo. There are boat trips on the Beagle Channel that make a stop in front of the island. This lets you see the penguins. The only authorized operator to disembark on Isla Martillo and let you walk among the penguins is Piratour. I didn’t do this excursion though, as it was quite expensive.
This was how I spent my five days in Ushuaia. In conclusion, I highly recommend visiting Ushuaia to any nature lovers. In fact, Ushuaia offers many opportunities for hiking in a scenery of astounding beauty, even for beginners. There is something suitable for everyone! For example, a boat tour on the Beagle Channel suits everyone. It’s ideal both for experienced solo travelers and for families. If you love being immersed in nature, you won’t be disappointed by Ushuaia.

Perchè Ushuaia è soprannominata fine del mondo?
Ushuaia è conosciuta come fine del mondo. Si trova appunto nel punto più meridionale della Terra del Fuoco in Argentina. Questo la rende quindi anche la città più a sud del mondo! In realtà, anche la cittadina cilena Puerto Williams sta reclamando lo stesso status, nonostante la sua popolazione sia inferiore a 3.000 people. Al contrario, a Ushuaia vivono circa 80.000 people. Questo ordine di grandezza della popolazione è più accettabile per uno status di città.
Dove si trova Ushuaia?
Come accennato, Ushuaia si trova sulla punta più meridionale della Terra del Fuoco in Argentina. Ushuaia è circondata a nord dalle Ande Fuegine e a sud si affaccia sul Canale di Beagle.
Da notare che Ushuaia ha una conformità unica in Argentina. Infatti, è l’unica città situata fra l’oceano e le Ande. Nel resto del continente, infatti, le Ande si distendono da nord a sud. L’Argentina si trova sempre a est della catena montuosa. Di conseguenza, tutti i territori al di là delle Ande appartengono al Cile. Al contrario, nella Terra del Fuoco, le Ande si distendono da ovest a est. Ushuaia si trova a sud di esse. Questo la rende l’unica città separata dalle Ande dal resto del Paese.
A che latitudine si trova Ushuaia Argentina?
Ushuaia si trova a una latitude pari 54,8019° S. Paragonandola ad altri luoghi dell’emisfero boreale, Ushuaia ha circa la stessa latitudine di Newcastle in Inghilterra. Ha pure circa la stessa latitudine della Danimarca e di Terranova in Canada.
Da cosa deriva il nome Terra del Fuoco?
Il nome Terra del Fuoco può apparire strano considernado le basse temperature che caratterizzano il luogo. Il nome fu assegnato dai primi esploratori europei che avevano osservato al loro arrivo i numerosi fuochi accesi dalla popolazione locale, i Yaghanes.
Ushuaia: significato
Nell’antico linguaggio Yaghan, Ushuaia significava “baia profonda”.
Ushuaia Argentina: come arrivare
Essendo una destinazione piuttosto remota, il modo più semplice per arrivare a Ushuaia è in aereo. Sono arrivato a Ushuaia con un volo da El Calafate; da Ushuaia sono poi volato a Buenos Aires per tornare in Italia. Se stai pianificando un tour in Argentina, in questo modo risparmierai un sacco di tempo. Il volo da El Calafate a Ushuaia dura circa 80 minuti. Il volo da Buenos Aires a Ushuaia dura invece circa tre ore e mezza. Per arrivare in città dall’aeroporto conviene prendere un taxi.
Infine, ci sono un altro paio di modi per raggiungere Ushuaia, se preferisci arrivare via terra. Si può arrivare in autobus da Punta Arenas, in Cile. Oppure si può guidare lungo la Ruta 40 e la Ruta 3.
Come andare da Ushuaia in Antartide?
Ushuaia è spesso considerata come il luogo di accesso per raggiungere l’Antartide, considerata la sua latitudine.
Infatti, il porto di Ushuaia è il punto principale da cui partono le crociere per l’Antartide. Occorrono circa tre giorni di navigazione per arrivare alla Penisola Antartica. Di conseguenza, una crociera da Ushuaia all’Antartide dura circa dieci giorni.
Sfortunatamente, le crociere in Antartide sono molto care: considera almeno 10.000 US$ a persona. Se sei fortunato\a, puoi sperare di strappare un affare last minute per 4.000 – 5.000 US$.
Quali compagnie aeree volano a Ushuaia Argentina?
Ho volato a Ushuaia con Aerolineas Argentinas da El Calafate nel Dicembre 2024. Ci sono voli dalle principali città argentine. Durante il mio tour ho preso diversi voli con questa compagnia e non ho mai avuto problemi.
Un’altra compagnia aerea che vola a Ushuaia è Flybondi.
Il volo da El Calafate a Ushuaia è stato assolutamente incredibile. Essendo seduto vicino al finestrino, al decollo ho potuto ammirare il bellissimo colore turchese del Lago Argentino. Avvicinandomi a Ushuaia, invece, volare sopra i picchi innevati delle Ande è stato spettacolare!
Ushuaia Argentina clima
Data la sua latitudine, il clima a Ushuaia non è mai troppo caldo. Durante l’estate, la temperatura media massima può raggiungere i 10°C. Durante l’inverno la temperatura minima media è intorno a -5°C.
Tieni presente che le stagioni a Ushuaia sono invertite rispetto all’emisfero boreale. Di conseguenza, l’inverno va da Giugno a Settembre e l’estate va da Dicembre a Marzo.
Anche in estate comunque il tempo può cambiare in modo repentino in ogni momento. Il vento ha decisamente un forte impatto, facendo percepire molto più freddo. Aprile e Maggio sono i mesi quando di solito il vento è meno forte.
Cosa indossare a Ushuaia Argentina?
Date le condizioni meteo descritte sopra, consiglio di avere sempre a portata di mano abbigliamento caldo. Pantaloni e giacca impermeabili sono un must. Le scarpe da trekking sono importanti per le escursioni.
Ushuaia è sicura?
Personalmente ho trovato Ushuaia totalmente sicura. Si tratta di una destinazione turistica e i locali sono molto alla mano e gentili. Non mi sono mai trovato in situazioni di disagio o pericolo.
Ushuaia Argentina è costosa?
Come il resto dell’Argentina, sfortunatamente anche Ushuaia è diventata una destinazione piuttosto cara. Dal 2024 i prezzi sono schizzati alle stelle, in particolare per mangiare fuori in bar e ristoranti. Sono ora simili ai prezzi in Europa e negli USA. I prezzi per gli alloggi sono invece ancora competitivi.
Di conseguenza, in generale, l’Argentina non è più una destinazione economica dal 2024.
Ad esempio, secondo il rinomato Big Mac index della rivista The Economist, nel 2024 l’Argentina si è classificata al quarto posto nel mondo come Paese dove il famoso hamburger è più caro. Al primo posto si è classificata la Svizzera.
Ushuaia Argentina: quando andare?
L’alta stagione a Ushuaia va da Dicembre a Marzo durante l’estate australe, come accennato sopra. Inoltre, durante l’inverno, da Giugno a Ottobre, Ushuaia diventa una importante stazione sciistica grazie al comprensorio del Cerro Castor.
Merita visitare Ushuaia?
Ushuaia merita assolutamente di essere visitata! Durante l’estate Ushuaia offre molte attività e luoghi da visitare. Ci sono numerosi sentieri per fare trekking nel Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. Altri sentieri si trovano nelle montagne che circondano Ushuaia, che conducono ad esempio al Glaciar Martial e alla Laguna Esmeralda. Oppure si può partire per una avventura in barca sul Canale di Beagle (assolutamente consigliata!). Di sicuro a Ushuaia non ci si annoia!
Ushuaia Argentina: dove alloggiare
Durante il mio viaggio a Ushuaia nel Dicembre 2024, ho alloggiato presso Anum Hostel in una camerata mista con 6 letti. Ho avuto una buona permanenza. Ogni posto letto era fornito di una tenda per una maggiore privacy, una luce da lettura e una presa elettrica. Inoltre, era inclusa una colazione continentale. L’ostello si trova nel centro di Ushuaia in Avenida San Martin. Di conseguenza, troverai ogni cosa di cui potrai aver bisogno vicino a te. Infatti, in Avenida San Martin pullulano negozi, bar, ristoranti e minimarket.

Ho trascorso cinque giorni a Ushuaia. Mi è piaciuto tantissimo il magico paesaggio del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego e delle Ande. In ogni caso, penso che almeno tre notti a Ushuaia siano un must!
Ci sono taxi a Ushuaia Argentina?
Sì, ci sono taxi a Ushuaia! La fermata principale dei taxi si trova proprio davanti al porto turistico. Qui troverai sempre una lunga coda di taxi in attesa di clienti. Prendere un taxi è il modo migliore per raggiungere l’aeroporto. Ho preso un taxi anche per andare al Glaciar Martial e a Playa Larga. Ricorda che gli autobus a Ushuaia non sono regolari.
Inoltre, prendere un taxi è comunque un’esperienza di per sé. Puoi sempre imparare qualcosa dal tassista, che ovviamente è una persona del luogo. I tassisti sono sempre molto disponibili a condividere la loro esperienza e conoscenza del luogo.
Ushuaia Argentina: cosa fare e vedere
Vediamo ora in dettaglio cosa fare e vedere a Ushuaia. Ci sono molte agenzie locali che organizzano tour e escursioni in giornata. In molti casi è possibile organizzare l’escursione in autonomia. Ad ogni modo, partecipare ad una escursione organizzata è sempre un buon modo per conoscere nuove persone. Quando si tratta di escursioni di trekking in zone remote, partecipare ad una escursione guidata è anche più sicuro.

Il Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego si trova a circa 10 km ovest di Ushuaia. Offre molte possibilità di trekking, nello splendido scenario delle Ande Fuegine e Bahia Lapataia. Il contrasto fra l’oceano e i picchi innevati resta unico nel suo genere.
All’interno del parco è anche possibile osservare la fauna locale. Esplorare il Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego è assolutamente un must se si visita Ushuaia. Si può visitare il parco in autonomia. Prima di andare, conviene passare dal Tourist Office a Ushuaia (Secretaría de Turismo de Ushuaia). Si trova davanti il porto turistico. Qui si può prendere una mappa del parco. Puoi trovare ulteriori informazioni sul sito del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego.
Puoi raggiungere il Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego da Ushuaia con il servizio regolare di shuttle. Lo shuttle opera con un minivan. Il punto di partenza è giusto a un isolato dal Tourist Office.
Lo shuttle parte ogni ora durante la mattina. Ho pagato il biglietto (andata e ritorno) 25 US$, che non comprende l’ingresso al parco. Una volta a bordo, la prima fermata è all’ingresso del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. Qui bisogna pagare l’ingresso al parco, che al tempo era pari a 40,000 ARS.
La fermata successiva dello shuttle è al famoso End of the World Train. Ho saltato questa attrazione, dato che mi pareva piuttosto turistica. Mi pare giusto comunque menzionarla, essendo molto popolare a Ushuaia.
La fermata successiva è Ensenada Zaratiegui, che è dove sono sceso. Da qui ho seguito il sentiero Senda Costera, che segue la costa attraverso una foresta di Nothofagus. Il sentiero è lungo 8 km e conduce al Centro Visitatori Alakush (Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego). Qui si trovano un ristorante, servizi igienici, un museo e un negozio di souvenir. Dal Centro Visitatori si gode di una bellissima vista sul lago Acigami (noto anche come Lago Roca).
A questo punto ci sono varie opzioni:
- puoi riprendere lo shuttle per tornare a Ushuaia;
- puoi continuare il sentiero fino al Lago Acigami fino al confine con il Cile (Senda Hito XXIV);
- puoi continuare il sentiero fino a Bahia Lapataia, dove termina la leggendaria Ruta 3.
Ho scelto di continuare il sentiero fino a Bahia Lapataia (ulteriori 4,4 km). Lungo la via è possibile fare brevi deviazioni per punti panoramici. Una volta a Bahia Lapataia, ho ripreso lo shuttle per Ushuaia. Considera che nel pomeriggio lo shuttle parte ogni due ore.
Navigazione sul Canale di Beagle
Un’altra escursione da non perdere se si visita Ushuaia è la navigazione in barca sul Canale di Beagle.
Il Canale di Beagle bagna la costa meridionale della Terra del Fuoco. Connette l’Oceano Atlantico con il Pacifico. Altri passaggi fra i due oceani sono il Passaggio di Drake e lo Stretto di Magellano.
Il Canale di Beagle deve il suo nome alla nave HMS Beagle. La nave fu utilizzata per esplorare le coste della Terra del Fuoco nel 1826. In uno dei suoi viaggi, pure il naturalista Charles Darwin era a bordo della nave.
Navigare sul Canale di Beagle Channel offre panorami unici lungo la costa della Terra del Fuoco, le Ande e le piccole isole che spuntano dalle sue acque. Inoltre, avrai l’opportunità di avvistare esemplari di fauna come leoni marini e cormorani.
Ci sono molte compagnie che propongono una escursione sul Canale di Beagle. I loro uffici si trovano di fronte al porto turistico. Alla fine, ho scelto di partecipare all’escursione di Patagonia Adventure Explorer. Questa compagnia organizza l’escursione in piccoli gruppi con una barca più piccola. In questo modo è possibile avvicinarsi di più alle rocce dove si rilassano i leoni marini. La guida parla sia inglese sia spagnolo.
Al termine dell’escursione, la barca si ferma a Isla Bridges. Qui si può sbarcare sull’isola e fare una breve camminata guidata. Il panorama mette i brividi.
Trekking alla Laguna Esmeralda
Laguna Esmeralda è un bellissimo lago annidato nelle Ande Fuegine. Deve il suo nome alle sue acque turchesi.
Il trekking alla Laguna Esmeralda offre viste spettacolari sulle Ande sin dall’inizio, il che la rende una camminata più che piacevole. Il trekking non è particolarmente pesante, dato che la pendenza non è esagerata. Complessivamente il trekking è lungo circa 10 km (andata e ritorno).
Il sentiero inizia sulla Ruta 3, 19 km a est di Ushuaia. Puoi vedere l’indicazione lungo la strada. Ho partecipato all’escursione con Arpon Trekking. Puoi comunque farla in autonomia, magari arrivando in taxi al punto di partenza.
Il sentiero all’inizio si addentra nella foresta per poi salire dolcemente verso il lago, lungo un torrente. Lungo il cammino fai attenzione alle dighe costruite dai castori. I castori infatti qui sono molto diffusi, essendo questo il loro ambiente ideale. Infatti non ci sono predatori nella Terra del Fuoco. I castori furono introdotti nel 1946 per tentare di instaurare la produzione di pellicce, ma il progetto fallì miseramente. Contemporaneamente, i castori iniziarono a moltiplicarsi senza controllo e oggi sono una minaccia per l’ecosistema.
Una volta arrivati al lago, la vista è fantastica. Dalla riva del lago è possibile ammirare il ghiacciaio Ojo del Albino. Il vento sul lago è veramente forte e freddo. Ti consiglio quindi di portare abbigliamento caldo con te. Guarda le onde sul lago nella foto!
Trekking al Glaciar Martial
Il trekking al Glaciar Martial inizia non lontano dal centro di Ushuaia. Si può tranquillamente percorrere il trekking in autonomia, visto che il sentiero è ben segnato e le indicazioni sono chiare. Altrimenti è possibile unirsi a una escursione con Arpon Trekking.
Per arrivare al punto di partenza ho preso un taxi da Ushuaia. Anche all’inizio del sentiero è presente una fermata di taxi, dove ne troverai in attesa al termine del trekking. Qui si trova anche una caffetteria molto carina, di nome La Cabaña Casa de Té. Le torte sono deliziose: è il luogo perfetto dove rilassarsi un momento dopo la camminata.
Dal punto di partenza ci sono vari sentieri da poter seguire.
Sono venuto qui dopo l’escursione in barca sul Canale di Beagle. Non avendo molto tempo, ho seguito il sentiero giallo, il Sendero del Martial. Ad ogni modo, al termine del sentiero, la vista è comunque impressionante.
Playa Larga: trekking alla Estancia Tunel
Il trekking alla Estancia Tunel inizia dalla fine della strada sterrata che conduce a Playa Larga, circa 9 km a est di Ushuaia. Si tratta di un sentiero costiero molto suggestivo, per lo più pianeggiante, caratterizzato da spettacolari punti panoramici sul Canale di Beagle.
La lunghezza complessiva del trekking è circa 6.5 km con un dislivello di 120 m, compresa qualche deviazione lungo il percorso per raggiungere dei punti panoramici. Ho percorso il trekking da solo, arrivando al punto di partenza in taxi. Mi ero poi messo d’accordo con la tassista di mandarle un messaggio quando sarei tornato al punto di partenza. Questo è uno dei motivi per cui acquisto sempre una SIM locale quando visito un altro Paese.
Considera che il vento può essere molto forte lungo il percorso: come sempre, non dimenticare di avere abbigliamento caldo. Nei punti più esposti il vento era talmente forte che riuscivo a malapena a tenere il telefono in mano per scattare una foto!
Lago Escondido e Lago Fagnano
Ho partecipato ad una escursione di gruppo per visitare questi laghi a circa un’ora di auto da Ushuaia. L’escursione inizialmente può sembrare piuttosto avventurosa, essendo in un 4×4. Alla fine però, si passa la maggior parte del tempo in auto. La parte più divertente è stata sicuramente il pranzo, dove la guida ha preparato un delizioso barbecue! Devo dire che la carne argentina è veramente fantastica: una delle migliori mai assaggiate!
Durante l’escursione, sono previste comunque soste a diversi punti panoramici, fra cui Paso Garibaldi e sulle rive del Lago Fagnano.
Dove vedere i pinguini a Ushuaia
L’unico luogo dove è possibile vedere i pinguini vicino a Ushuaia è Isla Martillo. Ci sono escursioni in barca sul Canale di Beagle che si fermano di fronte all’isola, in modo da permettere di osservare i pinguini. L’unico operatore autorizzato a sbarcare su Isla Martillo e permetterti di camminare fra i pinguini è Piratour. Non ho fatto l’escursione essendo piuttosto cara.
Questo è come ho trascorso i miei cinque giorni a Ushuaia. In conclusione, consiglio caldamente di visitare Ushuaia a ogni amante della natura. Infatti, Ushuaia offre molte opportunità di trekking in scenari di straordinaria bellezza, anche per principianti. C’è sempre qualcosa di adatto per tutti. Ad esempio, un’escursione in barca sul Canale di Beagle è perfetta sia per viaggiatori solitari, sia per famiglie. Chi ama essere immerso nella natura, non sarà deluso da Ushuaia.
