When you think about the Maldives, most likely a luxury resort will pop up into your mind. The Maldives have always been considered as one of the most luxury destinations in the world. Staying in a resort in the Maldives has always been really expensive. But, staying in a luxury resort is not the only way to visit the Maldives. In fact, now you can find a budget accomodation in the so-called local islands.
Local islands are the place where Maldivian people live. Only recently it has been possible to visit local islands in the Maldives, as they have been open to tourists since 2009. In addition to being a cheaper option than staying in a luxury resort, staying in a local island is also a cultural experience, as you can meet Maldivian people, see how they live, eating delicious seafood on a budget…
When you visit a local island in the Maldives, the most important thing to remember is that Maldivian people are Muslim, so you should respect some basic rules, like wearing appropriate clothes in public places (a t-shirt and knee length shorts are fine) and taking off your shoes when you enter a place (you will see plenty of flip flops in front of the entrance of any shop). For instance, I remember that, when I was shown to my room by a guy of the hotel staff at my arrival, he went crazy, as I accidentally entered the room without taking off my shoes! As a consequence of the Islamic law, alcoholic drinks are not allowed on the local islands. I highly recommend tasting fresh fruit mocktails!
There are many local islands to visit, so you can get a little confused when you have to choose which one to stay on. It also depends on what kind of activities you are planning to do once you get there. In the end, I picked Ukulhas island: though some people consider it too touristy, I did not want to end up in some kind of desert island either, as it was my first time in the Maldives and I was travelling solo. After my trip, I can say I am really satisfied with my choice.
Maldives visa
You won’t need any visa to visit the Maldives. You just need your passport and you need to complete the “Traveller Declaration” form on the IMUGA portal. At the arrival you will be asked to show which hotel you will be staying and your return flight ticket.
Maldives currency
The official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (1 Rufiyaa is about 0.06 €).
In Ukulhas, US dollars and credit cards are commonly accepted. There is also an ATM. However, I didn’t need to withdraw any Maldivian Rufiyaa.
Only once, when I visited another local island, when I paid in US$ at a restaurant, the owner didn’t want to give me the change in US$, but in Maldivian Rufiyaa.
Ukulhas Maldives time zone
Maldives time is 5 hours ahead of UTC. Keep in mind that in the Maldives there is not any Daylight Savings Time.
Ukulhas how to get there from Male
Ukulhas is a local island in the Maldives in the Ari Atoll. Once you get to Male International Airport, you have three different transfer options to get to Ukulhas:
- local ferry: it is the cheapest option (about 5 US$): the trip will take about four hours; consider that the local ferry is not scheduled every day.
- speedboat: it costs about 50 US$ each way and it takes about 90 minutes; there are two departures each day. This was the transfer I chose.
- seaplane: obviously the fastest and most expensive option.
Usually you can get your transfers organized by your hotel. Keep in mind the time of your flights when you book your transfers, because you may need to spend one night in Male, in particular if you arrive in the evening or if your return flight is early in the morning.
Where to stay in Male, Maldives
As my return flight back to Italy was scheduled early in the morning, I had to spend the night before in Male, the capital of the Maldives. Male is a very densely populated city: after a thorough research, I decided to stay in Hulhumale, a newly developed area of the city, which I found very safe and worth to visit for one day, featuring a beautiful promenade along the ocean with bar and restaurants. I stayed at the Point Inn. They offered complimentary transfers from and to the airport, which was great!
How big is Ukulhas
Ukulhas has an oval shape and it is about 1 km (0.6 miles) long and 225 m (246 yards) wide. So, you can easily get around Ukulhas on foot. When I visited Ukulhas in December 2023, no street was paved: I walked on the sand all the time during all my stay (I took on my shoes again the last day when I left the island!).
Ukulhas weather
Like the rest of the Maldives, the best time to visit Ukulhas is during the dry season, that goes from December to April. If you want to minimize the chance of rainy days, then you should visit Ukulhas in January or February. Anyway, always expect some showers during your stay in the Maldives.
Ukulhas hotels and guest houses
In Ukulhas you won’t find the typical luxury resorts that usually one would expect in the Maldives. At the same time, you will find really nice hotels where you can have an enjoyable and pleasant stay. I stayed at Ostrov Hotel and I had a great experience. My room was huge and it also had a nice patio. At breakfast a gargantuan buffet was offered, which included homemade local cakes, eggs, fruits, bread, jams, milk and fruit juices.
Ukulhas restaurants
The Ostrov hotel also features a restaurant which serves excellent seafood.
Another great place to eat in Ukulhas is Poblano.
In general, food is really cheap and delicious in Ukulhas. Typical maldivian dishes like Tuna rice or Chicken rice are about 6 US$; Maldivian Tuna Curry is about 7 US$. A fresh grilled fish is about 15 US$, which is always served with a bowl of boiled rice.
Is Ukulhas worth visiting?
I highly recommend visiting Ukulhas! Though it is not still very touristy, in Ukulhas you will find everything you need for a memorable beach vacation. In addition to a wonderful beach with crystal-clear water, in Ukulhas there are great restaurants, many supermarkets, some bars at the beach and some souvenir shops.
Basically, the southern part of Ukulhas is the most touristy: that’s where most of the hotels and restaurants are located. On the contrary, the northern part of the island is where most of the locals live: there you can find some supermarkets, some shops, the school…
In the evening, don’t forget to spend some time at the quay at the harbour where local fishers are back from their daily fishing trips and they clean their fish. In the ocean you can spot nurse sharks waiting for fish scraps.
Can you drink alcohol in Ukulhas, Maldives?
As mentioned at the beginning of this post, alcohol is not allowed in Ukulhas (and in any of the other local islands). On the contrary, you can enjoy tasty fresh fruit smoothies while soaking up the sun!
Ukulhas beach
Ukulhas features a beautiful white-sand beach with crystal-clear water stretching almost all around the island (the northern tip of Ukulhas is not accessible).
Most of the beaches of Ukulhas are considered as bikini beach: that means that you can stay on the beach just wearing your swimsuit.
In general, should you visit any other local islands, always make sure if you are entering a bikini beach or not. If it is not a bikini beach, you should wear some appropriate clothes.
The incredible thing about staying in such a small island is that at any time of the day you can always choose the side of the island facing the sun. Usually I spent the morning on the beach on the eastern side of Ukulhas, while in the afternoon I moved to the western side of the island, in order to watch the sunset at the end of the day: it was just a few minutes walk along the shore or across the village!
On the beach you will find sun loungers offered by the hotels where you can sit for free. I never saw anybody asking anything, for instance if you were from the hotel or not.
Ukulhas excursions
In addition to enjoying the beautiful beach of Ukulhas, I highly recommend taking part in excursions and day trips. On the island you will find many local operators who organize trips to other islands, snorkeling and diving trips… After reviewing them on the Internet, in the end I went with Papa Fish Excursions. I definitely recommend them: they are really professional, they know what they are doing and they make their best to make the trip funny and safe. Usually an excursion will cost you about 60 US$, which is not so bad if you think that you spend all the day out and you are provided with snorkeling equipment.
These are the excursions I took part in. Usually more destinations are combined together in a single day trip.
Thoddoo island
Thoddoo is another local island not far from Ukulhas. You can even visit it on your own taking the local ferry.
Thoddoo is famous for the sea turtles that live in its waters. Swimming with them is an amazing experience! This is me while snorkeling in the waters of Thoddoo!
Like Ukulhas, Thoddoo features a white-sand beach and crystal-clear water.
Finally, Thoddoo is one of the few local islands in the Maldives where fruits are grown. You can buy fresh fruits at the local market, like bananas and pineapples.
Picnic island
This is what most likely you think about when you think about the Maldives: a short strip of white sand in the middle of the ocean surrounded by crystal-clear water. This sandbanks is very close to Mathiveri, another local island.

Like Picnic island, this was another Sandbanks I visited during an excursion from Ukulhas and it definitely felt like being in heaven!
Madoogali island
In the past this island hosted a famous resort. After it went out of business, the island was abandoned and today it is completely deserted. It is possible to visit Madoogali island with a group trip only, as an authorisation is necessary. On the island you can see the ruins of what once was a luxury resort.
Manta Ray
A snorkeling trip to swim with Manta Rays is another must when you visit Ukulhas. This will be another unforgettable moment of your trip to the Maldives!
Nurse sharks
Swimming with nurse sharks in the ocean is another incredible memory of my trip to Ukulhas. Nurse sharks are not dangerous at all: so, don’t be afraid and enjoy this amazing experience!
In conclusion, I highly recommend visiting Ukulhas to anyone looking for a budget vacation in the Maldives. At the same time at Ukulhas you can enjoy a comfortable stay. While being a local island, at the same time Ukulhas has a wide hotels offer, restaurants and shops, unlike other local islands: that can make it the best choice for a first-time traveller.

Ukulhas, Maldive low cost in un’isola dei pescatori
Quando pensiamo alle Maldive, molto probabilmente ci salterà in testa un resort di lusso. Le Maldive sono sempre state considerate infatti come una fra le destinazioni più esclusive al mondo. Soggiornare in un resort alle Maldive è da sempre molto costoso. Ma, alloggiare in un resort di lusso non è l’unico modo per visitare le Maldive. Infatti, oggi è possibile trovare una sistemazione economica nelle cosiddette isole dei pescatori o isole locali.
Le isole locali sono le isole dove vive la popolazione maldiviana. Solo negli ultimi anni è stato possibile visitare queste isole di pescatori alle Maldive, essendo state aperte ai turisti nel 2009. Oltre a essere una opzione più economica rispetto a un resort di lusso, soggiornare in un’isola di pescatori è anche una esperienza culturale, poiché così è possibile incontrare la gente locale, vedere come vive, gustarsi delizioso pesce fresco a poco prezzo…
Quando si visita un’isola di pescatori alle Maldive, la cosa più importante da ricordarsi è che la popolazione maldiviana è di religione musulmana: bisogna quindi osservare alcune regole di base, come vestirsi in modo appropriato nei luoghi pubblici (una maglietta e bermuda vanno benissimo) e togliersi le scarpe quando si entra in un luogo al chiuso (noterai sempre molte ciabatte all’ingresso dei negozi). Ad esempio, ricordo che, quando al mio arrivo fui accompagnato alla mia camera da un ragazzo dello staff dell’hotel, era quasi impazzito nel momento in cui accidentalmente stavo per mettere piede nella stanza senza essermi tolto le scarpe. Un’altra conseguenza della legge islamica è che non sono ammesse bevande alcoliche nelle isole dei pescatori. I gustosi mocktails di frutta fresca serviti in spiaggia sono un’ottima alternativa!
Ci sono molte isole di pescatori da visitare: di conseguenza è facile far confusione su quale scegliere in cui soggiornare. Dipende anche dal tipo di attività che si vogliono fare una volta là. Alla fine, ho scelto Ukulhas: sebbene alcuni la considerino ormai troppo turistica, non volevo neanche finire in un’isola semideserta, essendo la mia prima volta alle Maldive e viaggiando da solo. Dopo il viaggio, posso certamente dirmi soddisfatto della scelta.
Maldive passaporto e visto
Per visitare le Maldive è necessario il passaporto con almeno sei mesi di validità: non è necessario nessun visto. Bisogna invece obbligatoriamente compilare online la “Traveller Declaration” form sul portale IMUGA. All’arrivo sarà richiesto di mostrare in quale hotel si soggiorna e il biglietto del volo di ritorno.
Maldive: moneta e come pagare
La moneta ufficiale delle Maldive è la Rufiyaa Maldiviana (1 Rufiyaa vale circa 0,06 €).
A Ukulhas, i dollari americani e le carte di credito sono comunemente accettati. Sull’isola è presente pure uno sportello per prelevare contanti. Personalmente non ne ho avuto bisogno.
Soltanto una volta, durante una visita su un’altra isola, pagando in dollari a un ristorante, il proprietario non voleva darmi il resto in dollari, ma nella moneta locale.
Ukulhas Maldive fuso orario
Alle Maldive non esiste l’ora legale. Di conseguenza, quando in Italia vige l’ora solare, le Maldive si trovano 4 ore avanti. Quando invece in Italia vige l’ora legale, la differenza si riduce a 3 ore.
Come arrivare a Ukulhas
Ukulhas è un’isola di pescatori nelle Maldive nell’atollo di Ari. Una volta arrivati all’aeroporto internazionale di Male, ci sono tre differenti opzioni per raggiungere Ukulhas:
- traghetto locale: è il mezzo più economico (circa 5 dollari): il viaggio dura circa 4 ore; considera che il traghetto locale non è programmato ogni giorno.
- speedboat: costa 50 $ a tratta e impiega circa 90 minuti; ci sono due partenze ogni giorno. Questa è l’opzione che ho scelto.
- idrovolante: ovviamente il mezzo più veloce e costoso.
Di solito è possibile fare organizzare i trasferimenti dal personale dell’hotel in cui si alloggia. Tieni presente l’orario dei tuoi voli quando prenoti i trasferimenti, poichè potrebbe essere necessario trascorrere una notte a Male, in particolare se si arriva di sera o se il volo di ritorno è di mattina presto.
Male, Maldive: dove dormire
Poichè il mio volo di ritorno per l’Italia era programmato la mattina presto, ho dovuto trascorrere la notte precedente a Male, la capitale delle Maldive. Male è una città densamente popolata: dopo un’attenta ricerca, ho deciso di soggiornare a Hulhumale, una nuova zona della città sviluppata di recente, che ho trovato molto sicura e piacevole da visitare per una giornata, caratterizzata da un bella passeggiata sull’oceano con bar e ristoranti. Ho soggiornato al Point Inn. Nel prezzo è compreso il transfer per l’aeroporto che ho senza dubbio apprezzato!
Ukulhas: dimensioni
Ukulhas ha una forma ovale ed è lunga circa 1 km e larga 225 m. Si gira quindi comodamente a piedi. Quando ho visitato Ukulhas nel Dicembre 2023, nessuna strada era asfaltata: ho camminato sulla sabbia per tutto il tempo del mio soggiorno (mi sono rimesso le scarpe il giorno in cui ho lasciato l’isola!).
Ukulhas meteo
Come il resto delle Maldive, il miglior momento per visitare Ukulhas è durante la stagione secca, che va da Dicembre a Aprile. Se vuoi minimizzare al massimo il rischio di pioggia, allora conviene visitare Ukulhas a Gennaio o Febbraio. Ad ogni modo, bisogna sempre mettere in conto qualche rovescio improvviso durante un viaggio alle Maldive.
Ukulhas hotels e guest house
A Ukulhas non si trovano i tipici resort di lusso che ci si aspetta di solito alle Maldive. Allo stesso tempo, si trovano hotels molto carini dove soggiornare piacevolmente. Io sono stato all’Ostrov Hotel e nel complesso ho avuto un’ottima esperienza. La mia camera era molto grande e comprendeva anche un patio molto carino. A colazione era compreso un buffet molto abbondante, che offriva dolci locali fatti in casa, uova, frutta, pane, marmellate e succhi di frutta.
Dove mangiare a Ukulhas, Maldive
L’Ostrov Hotel ha anche un ristorante che serve ottimi piatti di mare.
Un altro buon ristorante dove mangiare a Ukulhas è Poblano.
In generale, il cibo è piuttosto economico e molto buono a Ukulhas. Tipici piatti maldiviani come il Tuna rice o il Chicken rice costano circa 6 $; Maldivian Tuna Curry costa circa 7 $. Un pesce fresco alla griglia costa circa 15 $, che è sempre accompagnato da una ciotola di riso in bianco.
Cosa fare a Ukulhas, Maldive
Ukulhas merita assolutamente di essere visitata! Sebbene non sia ancora molto turistica, a Ukulhas non manca niente per una vacanza di relax in spiaggia. Oltre alla bellissima spiaggia con acqua cristallina, a Ukulhas si trovano ottimi ristoranti, minimarket, alcuni bar sulla spiaggia e negozi di souvenir.
Di base, la parte meridionale di Ukulhas è la più turistica: qui si trovano la maggior parte degli hotels e ristoranti. Al contrario, la zona nord dell’isola è quella dove vive la popolazione locale: qui si trovano minimarket, negozi, la scuola…
La sera, non dimenticare di passare qualche momento al porto di Ukulhas quando rientrano i pescatori e puliscono il pesce. Sull’oceano è possibile avvistare gli squali nutrice in attesa degli scarti di pesce!
Alcol in Ukulhas, Maldives?
Come accennato all’inizio dell’articolo, l’alcol non è ammesso a Ukulhas (del resto come in nessun’altra delle isole di pescatori). Al contrario, è possibile godersi gustosi succhi di frutta fresca mentre ci si abbronza!
Ukulhas spiagge
Ukulhas è caratterizzata da una stupenda spiaggia di sabbia bianca con acqua cristallina, che si distende per quasi tutta l’isola (la punta più a nord di Ukulhas non è accessibile).
La maggior parte della spiaggia di Ukulhas è considerata bikini beach: ciò significa che è possibile stare in spiaggia indossando solamente il costume.
In generale, se dovessi visitare qualsiasi altra isola dove vive la popolazione locale, assicurati sempre se la spiaggia dove stai per accedere sia una bikini beach o meno. Se non lo fosse, è necessario indossare un abbigliamento adeguato.
La cosa incredibile riguardo stare su un’isola così piccola è che ad ogni ora del giorno è sempre possibile scegliere il lato dell’isola che guarda verso il sole. Di solito, trascorrevo la mattina sul lato est di Ukulhas, mentre il pomeriggio mi spostavo sul lato ovest, così da godermi il tramonto a fine giornata: bastava camminare per pochi minuti lungo la battigia o attraverso il villaggio!
Sulla spiaggia si trovano lettini messi a disposizione dagli hotels dove sedersi gratuitamente. Non ho mai visto nessuno chiedere se chi occupasse un lettino fosse dell’hotel o meno.
Ukulhas escursioni
Oltre a godersi la bellissima spiaggia, non bisogna assolutamente perdersi alcune escursioni da Ukulhas. Sull’isola si trovano molte agenzie e tour operators che organizzano escursioni su altre isole, uscite in snorkeling o in immersioni subacquee… Dopo una ricerca su Internet, alla fine mi sono affidato a Papa Fish Excursions. Li raccomando assolutamente: sono molto professionali, sanno quello che fanno e fanno del loro meglio per rendere l’escursione sicura e divertente. Di solito un’escursione costa intorno ai 60 $, che non è così tanto se pensi che comunque trascorri un’intera giornata fuori e viene fornita l’attrezzatura da snorkeling.
Queste sono le escursioni a cui ho preso parte. Di solito, più destinazioni sono unite insieme in un’unica escursione in giornata.
Thoddoo
Thoddoo è un’altra isola non lontano da Ukulhas. Si può visitare anche in autonomia prendendo il traghetto locale.
Thoddoo è famosa per le tartarughe di mare che vivono nelle sue acque. Nuotare con loro è un’esperienza incredibile! Questo sono io mentre faccio snorkeling nelle acque di Thoddoo!
Come Ukulhas, anche Thoddoo ha una bellissima spiaggia di sabbia bianca con acqua cristallina.
Infine, Thoddoo è una delle poche isole delle Maldive dedicata alla coltivazione della frutta. Qui è possibile acquistare frutta fresca al mercato locale, come banane e ananas.
Picnic island
Questo è quello a cui pensiamo quando immaginiamo le Maldive: una corta lingua di sabbia bianca nel mezzo dell’oceano circondata da acqua cristallina. Questa sandbank è molto vicina a Mathiveri, un’altra isola locale.

Come Picnic island, questa è un’altra Sandbank che ho visitato durante un’escursione da Ukulhas e pareva veramente di essere in paradiso!
Madoogali
In passato quest’isola ospitava un famoso resort. Dopo il suo fallimento, l’isola fu abbandonata e oggi è completamente deserta. È possibile visitare Madoogali solo prendendo parte a escursioni organizzate, in quanto è necessaria un’autorizzazione per accedervi. Sull’isola è possibile osservare le rovine di quello che un tempo era un resort di lusso.
Manta Rays
Un’escursione di snorkeling per nuotare con le Manta Rays è un must quando si visita Ukulhas. Questo sarà un altro momento indimenticabile del viaggio alle Maldive!
Nurse sharks (squali nutrice)
Nuotare con gli squali nutrice nell’oceano è un altro ricordo incredibile che ho del mio viaggio a Ukulhas. Gli squali nutrice non sono per niente pericolosi: quindi, non aver paura e goditi questa fantastica esperienza!
Per concludere, suggerisco Ukulhas per chiunque sia alla ricerca di una vacanza low cost alle Maldive, senza rinunciare comunque a un piacevole soggiorno. Pur essendo un’isola di pescatori, Ukulhas ha una vasta scelta di hotels, ristoranti e negozi, a differenza di altre isole: questo la rende probabilmente la scelta migliore per chi visita queste isole per la prima volta.
